Rapid Hardening & Tempering of a Stainless Steel Ring for the Medical Industry

This centrifugally cast stainless steel ring was heat treated for a customer in the medical industry using a proprietary quenching apparatus that was developed here at Complete Heat Treating. The 1,400 lbs. CA-15 stainless steel ring has an outer diameter of 5' and is 6" thick. The ring was heated to a temperature of 1900°F and rapidly quenched using forced air. Forced air quenching is a versatile process, and when performed correctly it retains the desired mechanical properties while relieving residual stresses than can cause brittleness.

The ring was then tempered in a range from 600°F to 1115°F to a Brinell hardness of 271 to 301 which equates to a hardness of 28 to 32 on the Rockwell C scale. The tempering process was tightly controlled and monitored using advanced thermal control software. This project was completed within 2 days for the customer who is located in Saukville, WI.
